Sewing instructions for miniskirt Kim
shares
This 4-panel skirt is a quick sewing project, and even beginners can easily complete it. The flared hem allows the short skirt to sway beautifully with your movements. If you want to lengthen the mini skirt , simply add the desired amount of extra length to the hem of the pattern piece. The waistband is finished with an elastic band for easy slip-on.
Length at the center back = 40 – 46 cm#
In this tutorial, Kim was sewn from a thin faux leather.
Required materials:
We recommend a soft, flowing and opaque fabric such as faux leather, jersey, silk or polyester.
Sizes 34-50 | Outer fabric | 1.20 m | 140 cm wide |
rubber | 70 – 110 cm long | 3 cm wide |
Cutting:
Seam allowances are included - 1cm wide or as per marking clips!
Cut out the pattern pieces from your outer fabric. Lay the fabric right side up. Position the selvedges parallel to the center so you can place the waistband on the fold. The pattern pieces should all be laid with the writing facing up. Always align the grain arrow on all pieces in the same direction and parallel to the selvedge of the fabric. Transfer all notches from the pattern by making a 3mm snip with scissors or chalk. Notch the seam allowance along the fold, as this is always the center. Markings define the positions of dart ends, pocket positions, and much more. Transfer these either with chalk or pins.
You will need fabric:
- 1x bundle in the break
- 4x skirt part
Sewing instructions:
Seam allowances are included - 1cm wide or as per marking clips!
To sew this skirt you will need a sewing machine and an overlock sewing machine, or alternatively the zigzag stitch on your sewing machine to neaten the cut edges.
Be sure to use a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. This means that if you're using a home sewing machine, you should use either a zigzag stitch or a three-part stretch stitch. Then, finish all seam allowances with a zigzag stitch or another similar stitch to prevent fraying. The colored lines in the images show you, in addition to the description, where a seam needs to be sewn or glued.
When sewing, pay attention to the seam allowance included in the pattern. Seam allowances not specifically marked are 1cm wide!
Have fun sewing!
First, place the first two skirt pieces, right sides together, and sew them together at one side. Then, neaten the seam allowances together and press them back. However, if you're using faux leather, the cut edges won't fray and therefore don't need to be neatened.
Repeat this step with the other two skirt pieces.
Then, the prepared skirt pieces are placed right sides together and sewn together at both sides. The seam allowances are then neatened and pressed back. However, if you're using faux leather, the raw edges won't fray and therefore don't need to be neatened.
The waistband is placed right sides together and folded. Iron or spread the seam allowances.
The waistband is ironed or folded in half, wrong sides together, with the fold folded. We also recommend sewing a stitching guide (the width of your quilting foot) to prevent slipping or warping during sewing.
The prepared waistband is pinned to the skirt, right sides together, and sewn in place. Remember to leave a 4cm opening for the elastic.
Here you can see a detailed photo with our opening in the waistband.
Cut the elastic to the desired size and attach a large safety pin to it.
You then pull this through your tunnel. At the end, sew both elastic ends together and distribute the width evenly.
Don’t forget to close your opening again afterwards.
Here you can see our finished waistband.
If you are not sewing Kim from faux leather, you should neaten the hem edge, iron it 1 cm and topstitch it 0.7 cm wide.
