Nähanleitung Sommerkleid Quila

Sewing instructions for summer dress Quila

The asymmetrical Quila dress is so wonderfully easy to wear. It doesn't pinch anywhere and doesn't add bulk, but flows around the body like water. This dress is especially suitable for those women with a bit more curves. It's not difficult to sew, but does require some experience in handling and reading patterns.

Length in the center back = 98-103cm

→ To the “Quila” pattern

In this tutorial, the Quila was sewn from jersey in the top and from viscose in the skirt.

Required materials:

We recommend a flowing jersey with elastane and a flowing viscose fabric.

Size 34-40 Outer fabric top 0.75 m 140 cm wide
Size 34-40 Outer fabric skirt 1.25 m 140 cm wide
Size 42-50 Outer fabric top 1.00 m 140 cm wide
Size 42-50 Outer fabric skirt 1.50 m 140 cm wide

You will need both materials:

  • 1x front part made of jersey
  • 1x back right made of jersey
  • 1x back left made of jersey
  • 1x jersey neckband
  • 1x front skirt made of fabric
  • 1x skirt back right made of fabric
  • 1x skirt back left made of fabric
  • 2x fabric shoulder straps

Sewing instructions:

Seam allowances are included - 1cm wide or as per marking clips!

To sew this dress you will need a sewing machine and an overlock sewing machine, or alternatively the zigzag stitch on your sewing machine to neaten the cut edges.

Be sure to use a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. This means that if you're using a home sewing machine, you should use either a zigzag stitch or a three-part stretch stitch. Then, finish all seam allowances with a zigzag stitch or another similar stitch to prevent fraying. The colored lines in the images show you, in addition to the description, where a seam needs to be sewn or glued.
When sewing, pay attention to the seam allowance included in the pattern.
Have fun sewing!

Start by finishing the front neckline, pressing it inward toward the wrong side of the fabric according to the fold. The notches mark the width.

Sew this front piece to the front skirt, right sides together, with the notches meeting at the seam. The seam allowance is 1cm. Then neaten the raw edges together and press them down into the skirt. Next, sew the two upper back pieces. Sew the right and left back pieces together at the center back, right sides together. Neaten the seam and iron it to the left back piece.

Do the same with the two back skirt pieces.

Now iron the long sides of the neckband to the center of the left side of the fabric.

Pin this strip, slightly stretched, to the wrong side of the back neckline. Now sew the strip exactly along the ironed fold.

Iron the seam flat and fold the ribbon (with the fold) to the right side of the fabric. Sew it in place just above the fold, concealing the previous seam. Iron your finished product again.

Then sew the back piece and the back skirt together right sides together, neaten the seam and iron it into the skirt.

Neaten the raw edges of the side seam individually. Place the front and back pieces right sides together and sew the side seams together with a 1.5cm seam allowance. Press the seam allowances open.

Now neaten the armholes, iron the hem to the inside and sew it in place.

Now gather each of the four shoulders individually (here's a video on how to gather) . To do this, sew two auxiliary seams with a long stitch length (3.5-4). Instead of locking these, leave the thread hanging at the beginning and end. Tie a knot at one end and pull the other until the length is the same as the back yoke. Distribute the gathers evenly.

Then you can sew the shoulder seam together, right sides together. This will fold the neckline facing toward the back piece.

Neaten the seams and iron them into the front piece, then pull the neckline facing back to the front piece.

Iron the edges of the shoulder straps to the wrong side. Pin the straps to the center of the shoulder seams from the outside. Sew them on as rectangles, close to the edge.
Alternatively, you can use a ready-made ribbon and only fold in the short sides, e.g. edging tape or grosgrain ribbon (see photo).
Neaten the hem and press it 2 cm inward. Sew it in place.
